florence night-in-hell #265 - league president & liason
Is there a story behind your derby name; if so explain: i wanted something that gave kudos to my profession, but also sounded badass. my husband actually came up with my derby name. occasionally we run into people who don't know who florence nightingale is. (google it!)
How old are you?: 40. i decided to learn to skate a month before my 39th birthday.
How long have you been skating: 1 year and 2 months.
Alter Ego: i made several alter egos. my derby persona is one of them. i'm a different person at work - more focused, more professional. the real me is somewhere in between my derby persona and my professional self.
Motto or Theme Song: motto is "to thine own self, be true." theme song is currently "whatever it takes" by imagine dragons, but changes frequently.
What animal would you be?: otter
Favorite post-practice snack: water. nothing makes a girl thirsty like sweating off a gallon of water and giving the derby stank to the derby pads.
Biggest Obsession: improvement. i'm constantly trying to improve myself not only on the track, but professionally as well. i do a significant amount of education and i'm in the process of deciding what school i would like to use to start working on my doctorate.
How are you Military Affiliated?: i work for the department of defense as a civilian.
what made you join derby?: nurse ratched is my derby wife and we used to work together. on a social outing once nurse and i came across a booth of ass-kicking derby girls and decided to try it out for ourselves! nurse dove in and rocked it! after 2 years or so i saw she wasn't broken and decided to give it a try.
What’s your super power?: My superpower is being able to fit my ENTIRE foot in my mouth (proverbially), thereby creating incredibly awkward social situation for myself and those around me.
Ever had a derby injury? If so what was it?: No major derby injuries so far, just a lot of bruised pride and ego injuries.
How has derby had a positive impact on your life?: I moved here from Minnesota and I was really lonely for a long time. When I cane into the Derby community, I found a home. I am now part of a community that has razor-sharp claws when I need to be pushed, and yet offers comfort and a soft place to land when I’m falling. This community is my heart.
